TIF, Great for Developers, Scary for Taxpayers

As we approach Halloween, I am presenting the skeleton of this post to frighten the public, as it will understand after it has read the article published in yesterday’s The Morning Call, “New Museum sought in easton by 2009.”

I will flesh out this skeleton in a later post when I have more time.

As reporter Joe Nixon wrote, Northampton County “Council also voted  Thursday against participating in discussions on a possible tax increment financing district for a planned shopping center along Route 248 in Lower Nazareth Township near the Route 33 interchange.  The 5-4 vote effectively stops talk about a possible TIF district.”

The developer of the shopping center and John Kingsley of the county’s Department of Community and Economic Development, among others, were seeking the TIF district, which would have imposed a further tax burden on the shoulders of the county’s taxpayers - just as did the TIF that council approved for the S. 25th St. shopping center in Palmer Township - another tax exemption for developers that I  vehemently opposed at the council meeting approving the TIF from which I was ejected by two deputy sheriffs.

My further comments on this subject will be made as comments, and I urge readers to comment as well.

The TIF was also approved by Palmer Township at a meeting in which I also objected but was ignored.

The Easton Aread School District, the third taxing jurisdiction had already okayed the TIF before I became aware of what was happening.
