Easton Parking Garage Still in Imminent Potential Danger of Collapse
Easton, Pennsylvania blogger Billy Givens opposed the proposed parking garage of Arcadia Properties’ CEO and President Richard Thulin and Vice-President Shawn Langen, an Easton, PA, for the construction of a five-story parking deck on Larry Holmes Drive in the Delaware River and Bushkill Creek flood plain.
This is an urgent call to all fellow “tree huggers” to join me in this fight.
The existing public parking garage is deep in debt and lacks the funds needed to repair hundreds of rusted and broken steel cables that endanger the garage of sudden, catastrophic collapse and threaten the health, safety, and welfare of an unsuspecting public - including tourists to the Binney & Smith Crayola Factory and Store and Hugh Moore Park Inc. and National Heritage Corridor Museum and Visitors Center.
The rusted, frayed, and severed cables, or “tendon,” was caused by the elements - rain, snow, and sleet - invading the millions of fissures and cracks, many of these large, opening up over the years that maintenace of the facility by the Easton Parking Authority has been deferred for lack of funds.
Within two years of a ceremonial “burning” of the 30-year mortage on the facility, the EPA, Mayor Thomas Goldsmith, and Easton City Council refinanced it for another 20 years under Pennsylvania’s Municipality Authorties Act of 1945.
The payments on this unsafe facility are $225,000 a year, paid twice annually.
The Easton Police Department is located in this dangerous facility and is so small, inadequate, cluttered, and a safety hazard in general that its deplorable condition and environment could well have contributed to the homicide of Easton Police Officer Jesse Sollman.
